These closed-back Lancashire Clogs can tell a story of long before the first Industrial Revolution in England, from the fields of farms to the mud room before slipping into “inside shoes” for supper, —to the the wet, hard slate floors in the cold midlands factories, to the hike home when factory boys walked on one side of the street to get a good gander at the factory girls on the other side of the street, … the cheekiest lad would not waste time to “spark” at the prettiest girl! (sparking was easy back then, for these Lancashire clogs of the day were fitted with steel … at the farrier, just like a horse shoe). Sparking on a dark midlands after-work, with a quick knee jerk would cause any girl to shyly look down and with a smile, shuffle along in her own lashed up clogs, which kept her feet dry on the wet stones & her heart warmed when the sparks flew.
